February 10, 2007 (USU Media Relations) - MOSCOW, Idaho -For the first time since the 2004-05 season, Utah State's women's basketball team won back-to-back road games, as the Aggies beat Idaho, 57-53, Saturday night in a Western Athletic Conference game at UI's Cowan Spectrum. USU, which was playing without head coach Raegan Pebley for the fourth time this season, won consecutive road games for the first time since two wins at Utah Valley State and Southern Utah on Nov. 23 and Nov. 26, 2004, respectively.
Pebely delivered a baby on Jan. 30, and did not make the trip, marking the fourth time this season that the Aggies have been under the direction of acting head coach, assistant coach George Brosky, with assistance from Kristy Flores and Erin Scholz. USU is now 2-2 under Brosky's leadership.
Utah State improves to 9-13 overall and 5-5 in WAC play, maintaining fifth-place in the conference standings. The win sweeps the season-series for the Aggies with the Vandals for the first time ever, and marks USU's third victory over Idaho in the last four meetings, as the Aggies now trail the overall series, 3-8. The Aggies are also now 3-9 in road games.
With the loss, Idaho has dropped three in a row after winning two of the previous three, as the Vandals are 5-18 overall and 2-10 in WAC play.
Junior forward Jamelah Brown provided USU with a spark off the bench, tallying 11 points, including a crucial three-pointer, making her only trey attempt of the game, with 4:38 to go that gave the Aggies the lead for good at 48-45. After not making a three-pointer in the previous 19 games, Brown is 5-7 behind the arc in the last three games. Brown also pulled down a team and career-high seven rebounds.
USU out-rebounded Idaho, 37-33, marking just the sixth time that the Aggies had more rebounds, and are now 4-2 in those games.
Senior forward Brittany Phillips led USU with 12 points, while sophomore guard Danyelle Snelgro added 10 points, as well as dishing out a game-high five assists.
Idaho only had one player in double-digits, but it was Katie Madison with a game-high 28 points.
USU shot a season-high field goal percentage in a half, hitting 52.2 percent (12-23) in the second half, topping the previous high of 51.6 percent set on Feb. 11 against the same Idaho Vandals on the Aggies' home court.
For the game, USU finished 24-52 (46.2 percent), just off its season-high of 47.5 percent at home against Boise State on Jan. 4.
The Aggies were 4-11 (36.4 percent) behind the three-point arc.
Idaho shot 18-57 (31.6 percent) including 2-18 (11.1 percent) from three-point arc.
What kept the Vandals in the game, despite fouls being even at 14-14, was Idaho's 15-18 (83.3 percent) at the free throw line, compared to USU's 5-8 (62.5 percent).
Down by as much as eight points on two different occasions in the first half, the Aggies ended the half with a 13- 4 spurt to take a 27-23 lead into halftime, as USU is now 7-3 when leading at intermission.
Junior guard Taylor Richards hit back-to-back buckets to give the Aggies their biggest lead of the game at 33-25 with 16:27 to go.
Idaho tied the game at 35-all, and again at 45-45, but couldn't take the lead and Brown's trey gave the Aggies a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
USU returns home to host Nevada on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m., at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
